Wyler Aerial Tramway (closed for reconstruction)

The gondola to Ranger Peak has been closed since 2018. A reconstruction backed by roughly $27 million in state funding is underway — but it is not open, and will not be for a while.

Why go

  • Worth knowing about precisely so you do not drive up expecting a ride.
  • When it returns it will again be the only aerial tramway in Texas, with a view into two states and Mexico.

Planning notes

  • Phase 1 — parking, accessibility, restrooms and site work — has been targeted for completion around fall 2026.
  • The tramway itself, along with a visitor center and trails, comes in a later phase that still needs fundraising. Expect years, not months.
  • For the same view without the wait, drive Scenic Drive or hike from McKelligon Canyon.
